Residential Lightweight Gabion
A local Sydney pre-school needed a semi mature Ficus platypoda to be planted three stories up on the roof top of the building to maintain a play area for the children (the reason for the wooden seating). To enable the Ficus to have adequate growth to maturity, 17m3 of media was installed in the form of custom-made gabions. At planting it weighed around 9 tons (wet out), at maturity it will get to 12-15 tons but we have allowed for 20 tons (storm loaded). In a conventional planter box style planting with conventional landscape media it would have started at around 60 tons plus (storm loaded)! The amount they would have saved in engineering and construction costs as well as steel and concrete to support that weight would have paid for the installation around four times over.
