Awarding winning home features, our innovative greenroof technology is bringing life to a suburban laneway family home. A Newtown home was awarded the 2018 NSW Architecture Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) for the design by Jon Jacka Architects.
The recently matured greenroof features over 100 of The Greenwall Company’s patented Eco pillows to form the beautiful façade that not only the homeowners enjoy but also their neighbours.
The EcoPillow structure and the growing medium were developed for their lightweight properties, making the EcoPillow just 60kg/m2. Creating a lightweight and modular product were the design priorities. By reducing the overall weight, we reduce the builders need for additional structural support and open the possibility of retrofitting – something we feel the market is demanding.
Spanning over 35m2 of roof space, the greenroof features over 25 plant species including; Aechmea Blanchettiana, Alcantarea imperialis, Agapantas “snowball”, Rosemary officinalis “prostrate” Gernanium capitate and Tulbagia Violacese to name a few.
The plant selection was based on the location, aspect and factors including lighting, airflow and positioning on the block.
The green roof represents a substantial increase on the landscaped area compared to what we started with – the addition to the house substantially increases the garden area rather than taking away from it.
With 94% of the materials recycled it is an innovative way to take waste products destined for Australian landfill to reduce our carbon footprint.
