How you can recycle, reuse and reduce this Earth Day

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day around the world on Wednesday, 22 April 2020, we are sharing our everyday tips on how all Australians can recycle, reuse and reduce their individual carbon footprint.

When it comes to individuals reducing their own carbon footprints we believe education is key. There are a few simple ways we can all recycle, reuse and reduce the number of items that end up in landfill. We need to change our habits, look for alternatives and think about the impact on the environment before we stock up on unnecessary items, throw things in the bin or put them in the wrong one!

Over the past 30 years, we have found innovative ways to use over 94% of recycled materials in the greenwalls and greenroofs we creates. We have been using broken down recycled PET bottles that would otherwise be destined for Australian landfill for many years in our soil-free media, which is used as an alternative to traditional soil. The newest ingredients we have been including in the soil-free mix are polystyrene and used coffee grounds from our local coffee shop.

Our top tips for recycling, reusing and reducing waste this Earth Day include:

  1. Recycle: Start a collection box at your local school, community centre or council for all used PET bottles, polystyrene containers and coffee grounds to build up enough supplies to create one of our PET Bottle Greenwalls. A great way to recycle, get the community together and build a beautiful greenwall.
  2. Reuse: Always reuse any plastic bags, takeaway containers, glass bottles and jars. If you do need to purchase these items find another way to reuse them in the household or workplace.
  3. Reduce: Don’t purchase unnecessary items or stockpile for a rainy day (such as toilet paper), it’s not productive for the environment as when things sell at rapid rates it only increases production, causing more damage to the environment and further wastage.

Join us this Earth Day and start making small changes that will have a bigger impact on the environment that we will leave behind for our future generations. Get your local school or council on board to provide more options for recycling and reducing waste, while reclaiming the built environment with a beautiful PET Bottle Greenwall as an example of something positive to do with our old bottles. It’s a win, win!
